💡 Jesus Christ: The Lord of the Sabbath – John 5

🕊️ Starting Today’s Meditation with Prayer

Dear Lord, I come before You today to meditate on Your Word.
Looking back on yesterday, I confess I was often swayed by the rush and worries of life rather than resting in Your peace.
Today, I open my heart to hear from You through John chapter 5.
Reveal to me who Jesus truly is, and help me align my life with Your truth. Speak, Lord—I am listening.

John 5 begins with Jesus healing a man who had been ill for 38 years at the pool of Bethesda.
This miraculous act occurred on the Sabbath, which sparked strong opposition from the Jewish leaders.
Jesus responded by declaring that He is working just as His Father is always working, equating Himself with God.
He goes on to proclaim His authority to give life and to judge.
Jesus concludes by saying that the Scriptures, including the writings of Moses, testify about Him.

2. Interpretation in Context and Theology

John 5 marks a pivotal moment where Jesus openly declares His divine identity.
His statement, "My Father is always at His work to this very day, and I too am working" (John 5:17), reveals a shared divine mission.
The religious leaders reacted strongly not merely because of a Sabbath violation, but because Jesus made Himself equal with God.
Jesus explains that just as the Father raises the dead, so He gives life to whomever He pleases (John 5:21).
He also claims the authority to judge, linking belief in Him with passing from death to life (John 5:24).
