Lord God, I come before Your Word again today.
As I reflect on yesterday’s weaknesses, I seek to align my heart with Your truth.
Through John 2, let me understand how Jesus began His ministry and what it reveals about Him.
May Your glory be revealed in my life through today’s Word. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

1. Chapter Summary of John 2

John 2 centers on two key events. The first is the wedding at Cana, where Jesus performs His first sign by turning water into wine.
This miracle reveals His glory and leads His disciples to believe in Him.
The second event is the cleansing of the Jerusalem temple, where Jesus drives out those who have turned worship into business.
Through this, He declares that His body is the true temple, foreshadowing His death and resurrection.
These two scenes introduce Jesus as both the giver of new joy and the restorer of true worship.

2. Interpretation in Context

The miracle at Cana is more than a party-saving act—it’s a symbol of the new joy and life Jesus brings.
Turning water into wine points to the transformation Jesus offers, surpassing old religious systems.
The temple cleansing, placed early in John’s Gospel, marks Jesus’ authority to purify and redefine worship.
By calling His body the temple, Jesus identifies Himself as the new center of God's presence.
This chapter powerfully introduces the themes of transformation and cleansing in Jesus’ ministry.

3. Greek Word Study and Evangelical Theology

The word “sign” (σημεῖον, sēmeion) refers not just to miracles but to meaningful acts that reveal Jesus’ divine identity.
John prefers “signs” over “miracles” to focus on their spiritual significance.
In verse 19, Jesus says, “Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days.”
The word “temple” here is naos (ναός), meaning the inner sanctuary, and it refers to Jesus’ own body.
This statement points to His death and resurrection—key doctrines of incarnation, atonement, and resurrection.

4. Meditation and Application – Jesus Brings Real Change

John 2 reveals that Jesus is not a distant deity but one who transforms real-life situations.
The wine running out symbolizes human limitations; Jesus’ presence brings joyful abundance.
He also cleanses the temple, calling us to examine the state of our hearts and worship.
Today, ask: What areas of my life need Jesus’ transforming touch? Where is He calling me to be purified?
He still works today, changing hearts, renewing joy, and restoring true worship.

5. Closing Prayer

Lord Jesus, just as You turned water into wine, come and renew the dry places in my life.
Cleanse my heart like You cleansed the temple—remove all that distracts from true worship.
Make me a vessel of Your glory and joy, reflecting the beauty of Your first sign.
Thank You for being the true temple and the source of life. In Your name, Amen.
