🌍 Christian Worldview Series Part 3 - What Does the Bible Say About Words?

What Does the Bible Say About Words?

We use words constantly throughout our day, often without pausing to consider their power. Yet the Bible never treats speech as something trivial. In fact, Scripture presents words as a force that holds the power of life and death.

“The tongue has the power of life and death.” (Proverbs 18:21)
This is not poetic exaggeration. Words can heal or wound, build or break. A kind word can brighten a whole day, while a harsh word can destroy a relationship. We all know this truth by experience.

✨ God Created the World Through Words

The very first chapter of the Bible shows us that God spoke the universe into being. “And God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light.” God’s word was not just sound—it was power. It brought things into existence. This teaches us that human language, as a reflection of God’s image, is also creative and influential.

🧱 Our Words Build or Destroy

As image-bearers of God, we too possess the ability to shape others through what we say. A single sentence can uplift someone’s identity—or crush it. That’s why Scripture calls us not just to speak truth, but to do so in love, wisdom, and restraint.

🔥 James: The Tongue Is a Fire

One of the most powerful passages on speech is James 3. James warns that the tongue, though small, is like a fire—capable of setting the entire course of one’s life ablaze. Left unchecked, our words can do serious harm. Which is why spiritual maturity includes taming the tongue.

🕊️ Jesus Spoke with Truth and Grace

Jesus interacted with all kinds of people—sinners, disciples, leaders, skeptics. In every situation, His words were filled with both truth and tenderness. He could rebuke and embrace in the same breath. As followers of Christ, we are called to model that same holy balance.

🌱 Our Words Reveal Our Worldview

What we say reflects what we truly believe. A Christian worldview doesn’t just shape our theology—it shapes our tone, intention, and purpose in speech. Believers are called to be those who speak life, sow peace, and reflect Jesus in every conversation.

📖 Scripture to Reflect On

🙏 A Simple Prayer

Lord, may my words never be careless. Help me use speech to build, not tear down. Teach me to speak with the wisdom and grace of Jesus. Amen.
