💡 John Chapter 20 – Have I Met the Risen Jesus Today?

Start with Prayer
Heavenly Father, I come before You today reflecting on who I was yesterday. I lay down my fears and weaknesses and look forward to the Word You have prepared for me. Help me to understand how the resurrection of Jesus can transform my life. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.

1. 📖 Chapter Summary – John 20

John 20 records the most foundational event of the Christian faith: the resurrection of Jesus. Mary Magdalene discovers the empty tomb and informs Peter and John. After they inspect the site and leave, Mary stays behind and becomes the first to see the risen Lord. Jesus then appears to the disciples and later to doubting Thomas, urging him to believe. The chapter closes by declaring the purpose of these writings: that we may believe Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and have life in His name.

2. 🕊️ Interpretation – Context & Historical Background

John doesn’t present the resurrection merely as a miracle, but as the foundation for faith. The disciples are in despair and fear, yet the risen Christ radically changes their lives. The repeated use of the words “saw” and “believed” invites readers into the same journey of faith. Historically, the disciples' boldness in preaching after seeing the risen Christ affirms the power and reality of the resurrection. This chapter connects to the climax of redemptive history, revealing Christ's divinity and the fulfillment of God’s promises.

3. 🧠 Word Study & Theological Insights

Jesus tells Thomas, “Do not be unbelieving, but believing” (John 20:27). The Greek word for “unbelieving” is apistos, indicating not just doubt, but a refusal to trust. In contrast, “believing” is pistos, implying active, relational faith. When Jesus says “Peace be with you” (shalom), it is not just a greeting but a declaration of restoration, reconciliation, and salvation rooted in the Old Testament. This chapter affirms the evangelical doctrine of the physical resurrection of Christ, declaring it as the guarantee of our resurrection and new life.

4. 💬 Reflection & Application – Living by Faith

This passage invites us to examine our faith. Like Thomas, we may hesitate or doubt. But Jesus meets us in those places and calls us to believe. What truth must I hold onto today? Pray that the peace of the risen Christ would dwell in your heart, and consider how you can share that peace with others today.

5. 📌 Memory Verse

John 20:29 – “Then Jesus told him, ‘Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.’”

6. 🙏 Closing Prayer

Living Lord, thank You for the hope of the resurrection. Even in my doubt and fear, You are near, encouraging me to believe. Help me walk today in Your peace and boldness. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
