💡 John Chapter 21 – “Do You Love Me?”
Start with Prayer
Heavenly Father, I come before You again today, laying down my mistakes, regrets, and weaknesses. Speak to me through Your Word. Help me to encounter Your grace and love afresh. When You ask me, “Do you love Me?”, help me to respond with honesty and trust. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
1. 📖 Chapter Summary – John 21
John 21 describes the appearance of the risen Jesus to His disciples at the Sea of Galilee. After fishing all night and catching nothing, the disciples follow the stranger’s advice—Jesus—and catch a large number of fish. They then recognize Him. Jesus shares breakfast with them and has a personal conversation with Peter, asking three times, “Do you love Me?”—mirroring Peter’s three denials. Jesus then restores Peter and gives him a new commission: “Feed My sheep.” The Gospel closes by affirming that Jesus did many more things that are not written in this book.
2. 🕊️ Interpretation – Context and Historical Background
This scene is not just a post-resurrection appearance, but a moment of restoration and recommissioning. For Peter, it is deeply personal. After his failure, Jesus meets him not with condemnation, but with love. The repetition of the question, “Do you love Me?”, corresponds to Peter’s threefold denial. The Sea of Galilee, where Peter was first called, becomes the place of renewal. Historically, this moment shows that spiritual leadership is born not out of perfection but from grace and restoration.
3. 🧠 Word Study and Theological Insight
When Jesus asks Peter, “Do you love Me?”, He first uses the Greek word agapao, meaning unconditional, sacrificial love. Peter responds with phileo, meaning affectionate, brotherly love. On the third question, Jesus uses phileo too—meeting Peter where he is. This shows us that Jesus accepts even our imperfect love and still entrusts us with His mission. This passage highlights the gospel truth of grace-based restoration and a calling grounded in love.
4. 💬 Reflection and Application – Living by Love
Jesus doesn’t ask Peter, “Will you do better next time?”, but “Do you love Me?” He asks the same of us today. “Do you truly love Me—more than your comfort, your success, your guilt?” Even when our love is small or hesitant, Jesus meets us with patience and grace. Today, how will you answer His question? What will your love look like in action?
5. 📌 Memory Verse
John 21:17 – “Jesus said, ‘Feed My sheep.’”
6. 🙏 Closing Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You for never giving up on me. Even in my failures, You seek me out and restore me. Help me love You not just with words, but through service and faithfulness. Teach me to care for those You’ve entrusted to me. In Your name I pray, Amen.
